Quantification

Definition

In the context of sustainability, the process of making environmental impacts (especially greenhouse gas emissions, water consumption, and resource use) measurable, comparable, and verifiable. In this process, emission factors, data collection methodologies, and standards (GHG Protocol, ISO 14064, etc.) are used. Quantification forms the foundation of sustainability management because what cannot be measured cannot be managed.

Real-Life Example

Calculation of CO2 equivalent of energy consumption

Example Scenario

A manufacturing company collects energy data from different locations to calculate total carbon emissions and compare year-on-year.
