Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between HS / GTİP and CN code?
CN (Combined Nomenclature) is the EU's 8-digit common customs tariff code. HS is the international 6-digit base. Turkish GTİP is 12 digits and its first 8 digits match the CN code. CBAM scope is defined at CN level, so the first 8 digits of your code are sufficient.
Is the lookup legally binding?
No. This tool provides information based on the public text of Annex I, EU Regulation 2023/956. We recommend working with a licensed customs agent for final classification; CarbonSmart can support you throughout.
My code is in scope — what happens next?
Your EU importer will require embedded carbon emission reporting per product. During the transitional period (October 2023 – 31 December 2025) this is reporting only; from 1 January 2026 the obligation to surrender CBAM Certificates begins. CarbonSmart produces this report end-to-end.
What about codes that are similar but not on the list?
Annex I is a strict list — codes not present are out of scope. However, the EU may expand it over time (organic chemicals and polymers are among the planned additions). Periodic scope reviews are important.
I have multiple products, how do I check them all?
Through the CarbonSmart platform you can upload your full product catalogue at once, run a scope analysis and calculate embedded emissions. Request a demo and share your product list with our team.
